In anticipation of Kimbra’s forthcoming album Vows, EARMILK and Warner Bros. Records have decided to challenge all the bedroom-producers to put forward their best remix of Kimbra’s chart-topping single “Settle Down.” As compensation for your work, one lucky winner (Judged by Kimbra herself) will see their creation receive an official release on Warner Bros. Records UK, accompanied by a proper servicing campaign.

After I saw this campaign I decided to send the information over to one of my favorite producers Kodak to Graph and this is what he came up with. Make you hit the like button so our boy Kodak can win.

With so many beautiful bands to keep in mind and a number of schedule conflicts to sort out, LYFSTYL will feature an act each day to allow you to sample what is in store this summer at the Gorge.

Gary Clark Jr.

With a classic Blues sound blended with modern style, Gary Clark Jr. Is a beacon of the past, reflecting the legendary influences he consumed as a child, and now plays alongside as a man. At age 28, Gary Clark Jr. has established himself as one of music’s most exciting young Blues players. After onstage experiences with the likes of B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck the young crooner will only continue to develop his throwback Blues sound, adding to an already impressive musical resume.

And did I mention his voice is on par with Usher?

Standout Single – When My Train Pulls In

With only J.J. Johnson on drums for musical accompaniment, Gary Clark Jr. riffs away building a simple rhythm before breaking it all down in an endless guitar solo, assaulting the audible foundation he once built. From the 2011 EP Bright Lights, this live performance of When My Train Pulls In live at The Foundry is an epic rendition of an instant Blues classic.

Standout Album – Bright Lights

With one rippling scream, Gary Clark Jr. and his guitar announce to listeners everywhere that the Blues are back in a big way during the opening seconds of Bright Lights the title track of his latest release. “You’re going to know my name by the end of the night,” he declares after establishing dominance with his dynamic sound. I have a feeling the majority of music fans graced with Gary’s presence will remember his name for years to come.

Schedule

Gary Clark Jr. performs Monday May 28th from 2:10 – 2:55 on the Sasquatch Stage.

Conflicts with: Ben Howard, Chelsea Peretti, Damien Jurado, John Mulaney, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Katie Kate

Janine and the Mixtape is all about big beats and a bigger voice. They’ve been working hard recently and their first single Bullets has just dropped. Influenced by old school R&B and hip hop, this track gets inside your mind and will keep you coming back.

While it starts out slow expect to be blown away by Janine’s voice once the song gets going. Janine and her band are working hard to get more tracks to you – Bullets has set the bar for what we can expect from them.

New Zealand’s She’s So Rad have been getting plenty of attention since their video for their single Circles went viral, even getting a mention from Pitchfork.

Inspired by bands like Dinasour Jr, Sparklehorse and Teenage Fanclub, they play lo-fi electronic pop that gets the crowd dancing every time and have been touring their sound around Europe during April and May.

Their album In Circles is out now and has been garnering rave reviews from all over the planet. Get it In electronic, CD or vinyl form from their Bandcamp page.

The Sheepdogs

The cover of Rolling Stone can do magical things. For Saskatoon, Saskatchewan’s The Sheepdogs a debut on the cover earned the band instant fame, rocketing the talented, but unknown four-piece from the rolling plains of the prairies to the eardrums of listeners around the world. A blend of southern Blues, rock-a-boogie rhythms and burning guitar riffs, The Sheepdogs upstage their facial hair with a unique throwback sound that stands out in the modern malaise.

Standout Single - Who

From their EP Five Easy Pieces, The Sheepdogs reference a previous track with “Who,” a roaring single that questions the listener as they become transfixed by guitar rhythms and lead singer Ewan Currie’s howl. “The One You Belong To,” from the band’s album Learn and Burn is the forerunner this more recent EP offering.

“Well there’s talkin’ talkin’ talkin / and who of them know / how to keep from killing / everybody’s how it goes oh yeah / I try to understand it, I try not to lose / can you really win when you must pick and choose?”

Standout Album – Learn and Burn

Previous to The Sheepdogs’ recent EP release, the full-length album Learn and Burn had united classic rock revivalists together under one album, rewarding dedicated fans after every listen. By the sounds of things the band is getting by just fine.

This week for our ongoing Guest Post Feature...

Guest Post: Bitzl R

This week for our ongoing Guest Post Feature we hand the the reins to Bitzl R founder to showcase what his blog is all about. Read about Bitzl R and give a listen to his 5 amazing song choices he hand picked for you.

Bitzl R started in September 2010 as a space to share music and videos of immediate interest to myself (Alan Reilly.) Initially it was just a pinboard of artists works, posted with no real context, built using Tumblr purely because the nifty interface. However I quickly got wrapped up in the Tumblr community, taking influence from Yvynyl, Disco Naïveté, Gluttony Is The New Black and La 3e heure! (as well as design and general guidance from my pal Nialler9.) Contextless posts changed to a more filtered approach and over time the site found its own voice. It’s a new music site for sure, but it certainly isn’t specialised. There’s everything from folk to electronica (but never folktronica. No. No. No.) Dubstep posts might be followed by nu-classical. Fanciful imprecise melodies are aired alongside cutting and immediate tunes. There’s indie, lo-fi, experimental, new wave, old school, doo wop, lots of R&B, very little rock and pop always reigns supreme.

The pronunciation isn’t important, but just in case it ever arises in spoken conversation it’s two words, Bit-zel *pause* Or. Bitzl R has no agenda but that’s not to say there’s no objective, or even ambition. It’s a relay of great music that may or may not get promoted otherwise. It’s about living with and in culture (albeit a thin strand,) as opposed to dipping in and out of it. It’s about being informed and embracing what’s current without making any grand statements. Few acts featured will ever fill stadiums or win awards (whatever that measures), a certain few never even make it out of the bedroom. On Bitzl they are all presented in the same artistic light, that illuminating echo.

The site was originally named after a character from the novel Everything is Illuminated by Jonathon Safran Foer. The story charts a journey, discovering the past and shedding light on the present. An emphatic telling of one man’s trip to the town of Trachimbrod in the Ukraine in order to research his grandfather’s life. Bitzl Bitzl R was the gefiltefishmonger of Trachimbrod, that is, he sold gefilte fish to the townspeople. By no means a central character, he played a small but integral part, feeding the town and those that shaped its history.

This has to be one of the most creative and refreshing music video of 2012. It seems like most videos these days tend to be chopped footage of old movies and over exposed washed out footage.

Meet Adam Bainbridge the man behind Kindness. He has really got his music video game on point. In the video “House,” Adam plays the role as a music critic discussing his love for pop music with a young boy whom he teaches how to play the drum machine, synthesizer and so forth. The Best part of the video has to be when the song actually starts playing roughly 4 minutes in he and the young boy start breaking it down on the dance floor.

Check it out and tell us what you think about the video.

Gold Panda just dropped the digital versions of his two latest tunes Mountain // Financial District.

Both tracks were inspired by modern hip-hop. According to Gold Panda “the 808 snares on ‘Mountain’ are a nod to Noah “40″ Shebib and some-time Drake collaborators Boi-1da. Financial District is definitely my favorite of the two because it hit you in the face a little bit more quicker, and anything what gets me moving instantly is great in my books.

Look out for these bad boys on vinyl June 12th.

A few months ago we posted some music from our fellow Canadian George Jetson. We have been patiently waiting for him to hook us up with some funky fresh beats because it has been way over do. TODAY finally marks that day. Stream two of his latest tracks below.

There’s a lot of weak hip hop out these days; MCs just looking to get famous overnight and major labels after nothing but chart success. So it’s always refreshing to hear someone doing something different and trying to get somewhere with an original sound and hard work, instead of trying to emulate whatever happens to be popular right now.
Brooklyn’s Wiki is like a breath of fresh air in the hip hop scene right now. His track Wikispeaks deserves to be getting airtime everywhere – it’s one of the best hip hop tracks I’ve heard in years.

Some people aren’t going to be down with his nasally voice, but if you were into the Arsonists back in the day you’ll dig his sound for sure.
Wiki’s got a six track EP out now by the name of 1993, available on Bandcamp for US$5 – if you like MCs with crazy skill, go get it now.

What happened to hip-hop with a conscious?
There’s was a time when the Black-eyed Peas didn’t include fergie and they were an answer to my question. There was a time when the likes of De La Soul, A tribe called quest and RZA ruled the airwaves while questioning popular ethos. But that was then and this is now: the year 2012.

Since 2012 is proving to be a gongshow, I wasn’t surprised to relate to Pale Blue Dot by Mr. J. Medeiros. The 6 track album is a compilation of upbeat rhythms layered with thoughtful lyrics and lots of soul. Since it’s the end of the world, I figure we should all spend a short time contemplating what’s up in our Mother Earth (before admitting “The times ain’t bad. Things could be worse”).

Ever since the Low End Theory by A tribe called quest, I’ve been indulging in jazz-inspired hip-hop. It’s as if the music just gets me, especially when I’m in the mood to sit back, relax and enjoy a warm summer night.

That’s why I was excited to hear about Pete Philly’s solo album, One. The Dutch hip-hop MC is best known for his collaboration with fellow dutchman Perquisite but has recently come into his own.

Check out the track Oceans and make sure to add it to your summer playlist.
