Sasquatch Do Exist: Gary Clark Jr.

There’s less than one month until a myriad of musical monsters will emerge at the Gorge for the 2012 Sasquatch Music Festival. With so many beautiful bands to keep in mind and a number of schedule conflicts to sort out, LYFSTYL will feature an act each day to allow you to sample what is in store this summer at the Gorge.

Gary Clark Jr.

With a classic Blues sound blended with modern style, Gary Clark Jr. Is a beacon of the past, reflecting the legendary influences he consumed as a child, and now plays alongside as a man. At age 28, Gary Clark Jr. has established himself as one of music’s most exciting young Blues players. After onstage experiences with the likes of B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck the young crooner will only continue to develop his throwback Blues sound, adding to an already impressive musical resume.

And did I mention his voice is on par with Usher?

Standout Single – When My Train Pulls In

With only J.J. Johnson on drums for musical accompaniment, Gary Clark Jr. riffs away building a simple rhythm before breaking it all down in an endless guitar solo, assaulting the audible foundation he once built. From the 2011 EP Bright Lights, this live performance of When My Train Pulls In live at The Foundry is an epic rendition of an instant Blues classic.

Standout Album – Bright Lights

With one rippling scream, Gary Clark Jr. and his guitar announce to listeners everywhere that the Blues are back in a big way during the opening seconds of Bright Lights the title track of his latest release. “You’re going to know my name by the end of the night,” he declares after establishing dominance with his dynamic sound. I have a feeling the majority of music fans graced with Gary’s presence will remember his name for years to come.

Schedule

Gary Clark Jr. performs Monday May 28th from 2:10 – 2:55 on the Sasquatch Stage.

Conflicts with: Ben Howard, Chelsea Peretti, Damien Jurado, John Mulaney, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Katie Kate

Sasquatch Do Exist: The Sheepdogs

There’s less than one month until a myriad of musical monsters will emerge at the Gorge for the 2012 Sasquatch Music Festival. With so many beautiful bands to keep in mind and a number of schedule conflicts to sort out, LYFSTYL will feature an act each day to allow you to sample what is in store this summer at the Gorge.

The Sheepdogs

The cover of Rolling Stone can do magical things. For Saskatoon, Saskatchewan’s The Sheepdogs a debut on the cover earned the band instant fame, rocketing the talented, but unknown four-piece from the rolling plains of the prairies to the eardrums of listeners around the world. A blend of southern Blues, rock-a-boogie rhythms and burning guitar riffs, The Sheepdogs upstage their facial hair with a unique throwback sound that stands out in the modern malaise.

Standout Single - Who

From their EP Five Easy Pieces, The Sheepdogs reference a previous track with “Who,” a roaring single that questions the listener as they become transfixed by guitar rhythms and lead singer Ewan Currie’s howl. “The One You Belong To,” from the band’s album Learn and Burn is the forerunner this more recent EP offering.

“Well there’s talkin’ talkin’ talkin / and who of them know / how to keep from killing / everybody’s how it goes oh yeah / I try to understand it, I try not to lose / can you really win when you must pick and choose?”

Standout Album – Learn and Burn

Previous to The Sheepdogs’ recent EP release, the full-length album Learn and Burn had united classic rock revivalists together under one album, rewarding dedicated fans after every listen. By the sounds of things the band is getting by just fine.

Schedule

The Sheepdogs perform Monday, May 28th from 12:00 – 12:45 on the Sasquatch stage.

Conflicts with: The Sights, Gold Leaves

Sasquatch Do Exist: Charles Bradley

There’s less than one month until a myriad of musical monsters will emerge at the Gorge for the 2012 Sasquatch Music Festival. With so many beautiful bands to keep in mind and a number of schedule conflicts to sort out, LYFSTYL will feature an act each day to allow you to sample what is in store this summer at the Gorge.

Charles Bradley

Charles Bradley, The Screaming Eagle of Soul, is set to touch the Sasquatch faithful with his soulful sound that strikes of several of Soul’s best in history. A man well-versed in the down-and-out experiences that drives the Soul sound, Bradley has been driven to take the stage since witnessing James Brown perform at the Apollo Theatre at the impressionable age of 14.

Standout Single – Why Is It So Hard

Charles Bradley, a native of Gainesville, Florida moved to New York to re-unite with his mother at a young age, a move that threw him head first into a life of poverty and tragedy. The experience Bradley wears on his worn but beaming face is trumped by his emotional voice that maximizes the energy emitted still inspired after 60 years of hardship. It is all too appropriate that a man of Bradley’s experience sing such a powerful and sombre song.

Standout Album – No Time For Dreaming

Backed by the Menahan Street Band, Charles Bradley packs an entire life’s worth of soul into his debut album “No Time For Dreaming,” telling tales from his tragic life story while balancing the emotional scales with uplifting Soul ballads.

Schedule

Charles Bradley and his extraordinaires perform Saturday, May 25th from 1:05 – 1:50.

Conflicts with: I Break Horses, Pete Holmes, Said The Whale

Sasquatch Do Exist: Trampled By Turtles

There’s less than one month until a myriad of musical monsters will emerge at the Gorge for the 2012 Sasquatch Music Festival. With so many beautiful bands to keep in mind and a number of schedule conflicts to sort out, LYFSTYL will feature an act each day to allow you to sample what is in store this summer at the Gorge.

Trampled By Turtles

Bluegrass heavyweight Trampled By Turtles are set to grace the Sasquatch stages with a raucous set featuring the signature sounds of the Duluth, Minnesota quintet. Building on the youthful exuberance of the musicians’ previous punk rock experience, Tramples By Turtles creates a ferocious sound weaving together wonderful guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin elements into meandering waves of emotion.

Standout Single – Wait So Long

From the 2010 release “Palamino,” Tramples By Turtles first grabbed my attention with the riveting single “Wait So Long,” featuring fine fiddle melodies and the driving banjo play of Dave Carroll. The searing solo from Ryan Young doesn’t hurt, either.

Standout Album – Stars and Satellites

Trampled By Turtles’ most recent album “Stars and Satellites,” promised to be one of their best yet. From the opening track “Midnight On The Interstate,” to the soaring instrumental “Risk,” the album demonstrates a serious depth of song writing and musicianship under the banner of Bluegrass bliss.

Schedule

Tramples By Turtles perform on the Sasquatch stage Sunday, May 26th from 2:10 – 2:55.

Conflicts with: Hospitality, Beardyman, Howlin Rain, Fly Moon Royalty

Sasquatch Do Exist: tUnE-yArDs

There’s less than one month until a myriad of musical monsters will emerge at the Gorge for the 2012 Sasquatch Music Festival. With so many beautiful bands to keep in mind and a number of schedule conflicts to sort out, LYFSTYL will feature an act each day to allow you to sample what is in store this summer at the Gorge.

tUnE-yArDs

tUnE-yArDs

Unconventional and uncompromising, tUne-yArDs is an avant-garde brand of vicious beats and sharp vocals provided by creator Merill Garbus. While Garbus herself is a polarizing figure, her music manages to unite listeners under an almost indefinable genre, utilizing musical loops to mesh together a number of influences and instruments.

Standout Single - Powa

Watching tUne-yArDs perform gives significant insight into the recording process, as Garbus demonstrates how she is able to string together chords, vocals, and loops on the fly all in perfect rhythm. Using the ukulele Garbus creates a unique striking sound in “Powa,” allowing the previously-created drum loop to fit comfortably around the charging chords.

Standout Album – W H O K I L L

To my ears “Gangsta” is the consummate tUne-yArDs track. Featuring vocal looping, Garbus on drums and additional instrumental accompaniment, the song embodies tUne-yArDs’ latest album W H O K I L L as a testament to the talent and random creativity involved in the process.

Schedule

tUne-yArDs performs Saturday, May 25th 7:30 – 8:30 on Bigfoot stage.

Conflicts with: The Shins, Metric, NobodyBeatsTheDrum, Coeur de Pirate
